Target intelligence / Profile preview

Carnitine/organic cation transporter type 2 (OCTN2)

Target
OCTN2
Molecular classification
Transporter, Solute Carrier
01

Overview

Carnitine/organic cation transporter type 2 (OCTN2) is a membrane protein encoded by the SLC22A5 gene. It mediates the active cellular uptake of carnitine and certain organic cations. OCTN2 is crucial for carnitine homeostasis, which is essential for mitochondrial beta-oxidation of fatty acids. Mutations in SLC22A5 cause primary systemic carnitine deficiency (SCD).
