Overview

Solute carrier family 22 member B5 (SVOPL) is a protein-coding gene that encodes a vesicular protein most similar to SVOP, and is part of the SLC22B subfamily of solute carriers. It is distant from classical organic cation/anion/zwitterion transporters in the SLC22A subfamily, but shares homology with synaptic vesicle glycoproteins (SV2). SVOPL displays a canonical 12-transmembrane domain architecture characteristic of the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) transporters. Its precise physiological substrate(s) and direct function are unknown, and it remains classified as an orphan transporter. Expression is detected in various tissues, with notable upregulation in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma linked to worse clinical prognosis, suggesting its potential as a novel therapeutic target in cancer. There are currently no drugs, known endogenous ligands, or mechanistic studies specific to SVOPL, and validated disease biomarkers or safety considerations have not been established.
