Overview

Solvated hydrogen ions, primarily existing as hydronium (H3O+) in aqueous biological fluids, are fundamental to the maintenance of physiological pH and acid-base homeostasis. In the stomach, these ions are a major component of gastric acid, where they facilitate the denaturation of dietary proteins and the conversion of pepsinogen to its active form, pepsin (StatPearls, 2023). The concentration of these ions is strictly regulated across different biological compartments, as deviations can significantly impair enzymatic activities and cellular functions (NIH, 2022). Pathologically, an excess of solvated hydrogen ions in the gastric lumen is associated with conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulceration, while systemic imbalances can lead to metabolic acidosis (Wikipedia, 2024). Therapeutic strategies targeting these ions include the administration of antacids, which are weak bases that directly neutralize the ions to form water and salts, providing symptomatic relief from hyperacidity (PubChem, 2024). Unlike proton pump inhibitors that inhibit the production of these ions, antacids interact directly with the existing solvated hydrogen ions within the gastric environment.
