SPATA13 antisense RNA 1 (SPATA13-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA located on chromosome 13q12.12 overlapping the SPATA13 gene. SPATA13-AS1 does not encode a protein but may regulate SPATA13 and thus influence cellular processes such as actin cytoskeleton dynamics and smooth muscle contraction. Genome-wide association studies have identified SPATA13-AS1 as a marker for variability in short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) bronchodilator response in asthma patients, particularly in African American populations. The specific molecular mechanisms are unconfirmed, but SPATA13-AS1 could act as a cis-regulatory element modulating SPATA13 expression, which itself is involved in guanine nucleotide exchange factor activity controlling Rho-family GTPases (Rac1, Cdc42). There are currently no documented direct drug interactions, established mechanisms of action for therapies, or safety concerns associated with SPATA13-AS1[1][2][3][4].
Genetic variation in SPATA13-AS1 may regulate SPATA13 or related pathways, affecting response to bronchodilators; direct molecular mechanisms not experimentally established[4].
