Overview

SPATA8 antisense RNA 1 (head to head) (SPATA8-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the genomic region opposite the SPATA8 gene. Like other antisense RNAs, SPATA8-AS1 is proposed to be involved in the regulation of gene expression, possibly exerting effects through complementary binding to the sense mRNA or by recruiting chromatin-modifying complexes to influence local epigenetic states. The specific biological and pathological roles of SPATA8-AS1 are not well-characterized, and there is currently no strong evidence that this RNA functions as a classical therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or similar molecule. Some sources note an interaction with folic acid in the rat genome, but the functional significance of this is not established or understood in detail. No drugs are currently known to target this RNA, no clinical biomarkers have been reported, and no safety issues are documented. In summary, SPATA8-AS1 represents a member of the diverse lncRNA and antisense RNA gene families with a possible regulatory function, but its precise role in health or disease is largely uncharacterized in the literature as of now.
