Spike Glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 (Omicron BA.1) (S protein (Omicron BA.1))

Target
S protein (Omicron BA.1)
Molecular classification
Viral protein, Glycoprotein, Transmembrane protein
01

Overview

The spike (S) glycoprotein is a large, trimeric, class I fusion protein found on the surface of SARS-CoV-2 virions, specifically the Omicron BA.1 variant. It mediates viral entry into host cells by binding to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and facilitating membrane fusion. The S protein is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies and vaccine design. Omicron BA.1 harbors numerous mutations throughout its spike gene compared to earlier variants, altering antigenic sites and potentially enhancing ACE2 affinity or modulating fusogenicity/immune escape.

Mechanism of action

Antibodies bind to the spike protein, preventing ACE2 binding and/or membrane fusion, thus neutralizing the virus. Vaccines induce the production of such antibodies.
