Spike Glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 (Omicron JN.1) (S protein)

Target
S protein
Molecular classification
Viral protein, Glycoprotein, Fusion protein
01

Overview

The spike glycoprotein (S protein) of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron JN.1 variant is a trimeric, class I fusion protein on the viral surface. It mediates viral entry into host cells by binding to ACE2 and facilitating membrane fusion. JN.1 contains numerous mutations in the spike gene that enhance transmissibility and immune escape. It is the main target for neutralizing antibodies elicited by infection or vaccination.

Mechanism of action

Neutralizing antibodies bind to the spike protein, preventing ACE2 binding and/or membrane fusion. Vaccines induce an antibody response targeting the spike protein.
