Target intelligence / Profile preview
The spike glycoprotein (S protein) of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is a large, trimeric, type I membrane protein essential for viral entry into host cells. It mediates attachment to the host cell receptor ACE2 and facilitates membrane fusion. The Omicron variant features numerous mutations in its spike protein, particularly in the receptor-binding domain (RBD), contributing to increased transmissibility and immune evasion. It is a major target for vaccines and therapeutics.
Binding to ACE2 receptor to mediate viral entry. Target of neutralizing antibodies that block ACE2 binding or interfere with membrane fusion.
