The receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the S1 subunit of the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein is a critical component for viral entry into host cells. It directly binds to the human ACE2 receptor, initiating the process of membrane fusion. The RBD is a major target for neutralizing antibodies and is used in many COVID-19 vaccines to elicit protective immunity. Mutations in the RBD can affect ACE2 binding affinity, susceptibility to neutralizing antibodies, and overall viral pathogenicity.
