The "Spleen" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) does not refer to the anatomical spleen found in biomedicine, but describes an energetic-functional system central to digestion, nutrient extraction, fluid and blood regulation, and the production of "Qi" (vital energy)[1][4][7]. The Spleen (with the Stomach) is credited with transforming food and fluids into nutrient essence, distributing these nutrients throughout the body, supporting muscle and cognitive function, and preventing pathological "dampness" (features akin to edema)[3][4][8]. Dysfunction in "Spleen Qi" manifests as fatigue, digestive complaints, fluid retention, or weakness[5]. This entity is useful and meaningful within TCM theory and practice, but not mappable to a discrete molecular entity required for structured pharmacological or molecular target databases.
