Overview

SSX family member 9, pseudogene (SSX9P) is a member of the SSX family of highly homologous genes associated with the synovial sarcoma X breakpoint protein family. However, SSX9P is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it does not code for a functional protein product. While protein-coding SSX family members act as transcriptional repressors and elicit humoral and cellular immune responses in cancer, SSX9P does not share those functions. SSX9P is not involved in the t(X;18) translocation characteristic of synovial sarcoma. Its designation as a pseudogene means it is not considered a druggable or tractable therapeutic target. Some confusion exists in the literature due to overlapping or inaccurate annotation—SSX9P should not be conflated with proteins such as ELSPBP1 (epididymal sperm-binding protein 1) or other unrelated reproductive proteins[1][2][3][4][7].
