Overview

Staphylococcus warneri is a coagulase-negative, Gram-positive bacterium that is a common member of the skin flora in humans and animals (Wikipedia, 2023). While it is generally considered a commensal organism with low pathogenicity, it can function as an opportunistic pathogen, particularly in patients with suppressed immune systems or implanted medical devices (PubMed, PMID: 25201918). It is frequently implicated in healthcare-associated infections, including catheter-related bacteremia, neonatal sepsis, and infective endocarditis (NIH, 2022). The bacterium's ability to adhere to polymer surfaces and form protective biofilms is a key factor in its clinical persistence and resistance to host defenses (StatPearls, 2023). Treatment typically involves the administration of glycopeptides like vancomycin or other antibiotics such as linezolid and daptomycin, though the emergence of methicillin resistance has been documented (PubMed, PMID: 31548545). As a whole organism rather than a specific protein, enzyme, or receptor, Staphylococcus warneri is classified as a pathogen rather than a discrete molecular drug target.
