The stratum corneum (SC) lipid matrix is the primary physical barrier of the skin, composed of ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids organized into highly ordered lamellar bilayers [1]. This extracellular matrix fills the spaces between corneocytes, creating a brick and mortar structure that is essential for preventing excessive transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and maintaining cutaneous hydration [2].
