Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharide antigens are complex carbohydrate structures that form a capsule surrounding the bacterium. These capsules are the primary virulence factors of S. pneumoniae because they protect the bacteria from phagocytosis by host immune cells and interfere with opsonophagocytic clearance mechanisms. Each serotype is defined by unique structural features in its capsular polysaccharide. These antigens are targets for pneumococcal vaccines (polysaccharide and conjugate), which induce serotype-specific antibody responses.
Antibodies bind to the capsular polysaccharide, opsonizing the bacteria and facilitating phagocytosis and complement-mediated killing.
