Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharides (CPS) are high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymers that form a capsule surrounding the bacterial cell. This capsule is the dominant surface structure of S. pneumoniae and is essential for its virulence. The CPS protects the bacterium from host immune responses by interfering with opsonophagocytic clearance mechanisms.
