Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharides (CPS) are high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymers that form a capsule surrounding the bacterial cell. This capsule is the dominant surface structure of S. pneumoniae and is essential for its virulence by shielding the bacteria from immune responses. The listed serotypes (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F and 23F) are among the most common causes of invasive pneumococcal disease and are targeted by current pneumococcal vaccines. Each serotype has a unique chemical structure, and immunity to one serotype does not confer protection against others. Vaccination strategies rely on purified CPS or CPS conjugated to protein carriers to induce serotype-specific immunity.
