Streptococcus pneumoniae Polysaccharide (Conjugated to CRM197) (PCV)

Target
PCV
Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Protein Conjugate, Vaccine Antigen
01

Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae polysaccharide conjugated to CRM197 is a vaccine antigen used in pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs). It consists of capsular polysaccharides from various serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, chemically linked to CRM197, a non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin. This conjugation transforms the immune response from T-cell independent to T-cell dependent, resulting in higher antibody titers, improved immunological memory, and broader protection, particularly in infants and young children.

Mechanism of action

Induces antibody production against *Streptococcus pneumoniae* capsular polysaccharides, preventing infection by opsonization and complement-mediated killing. Conjugation to CRM197 enhances T-cell dependent immune response.
