Overview

Superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] (SOD1) is a critical antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, protecting cells from oxidative damage. Mutations in SOD1 are causative for some forms of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (fALS). Overexpression has also been observed in various cancers.
