Overview

The term "suppression of inflammatory cytokine expression (such as IL-6, TNF-α)" describes a therapeutic approach targeting the reduction or inhibition of key pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Both IL-6 and TNF-α are critical mediators in immune and inflammatory responses, playing causal roles in diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain cancers. They function as signal proteins that can drive inflammation, tissue damage, and systemic responses when dysregulated. Direct inhibition is achieved by biologic drugs that block either the cytokine itself or its receptor, interrupting downstream signaling such as the JAK/STAT or NF-κB pathways. Clinical measurement of these cytokines and CRP can be used as biomarkers to guide therapy and monitor efficacy. However, blocking these cytokines also carries risks, notably immunosuppression and vulnerability to infections.
