While not a single molecular target, this homeostatic balance is the primary therapeutic objective for numerous drug classes, including diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and vasopressin antagonists (Merck Manual, 2023). These pharmacological agents typically act on specific transporters or receptors in the kidney to modulate solute and water excretion (PubMed, 2021). Disruptions in this balance are central to the pathology of conditions like heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and metabolic disorders. Consequently, monitoring serum electrolytes and acid-base status is critical for ensuring patient safety and therapeutic efficacy in clinical practice (StatPearls, 2023).
