Overview

TRAJ2 (T cell receptor alpha joining 2) is a genomic segment located in the T cell receptor alpha locus on chromosome 14. It is a J (joining) region that participates in the somatic recombination generating functional T cell receptor alpha chains. The full T cell receptor (TCR) is a heterodimeric protein complex present on the surface of T lymphocytes, recognizing peptide antigens presented by MHC molecules and initiating adaptive immune responses. TRAJ2 itself is non-functional in terms of protein coding, and serves merely as one of many possible joining segments combined with variable (V) regions to create diverse antigen-binding repertoires. Some joining segments in the TCR alpha locus, including TRAJ2, may be classified as pseudogenes if incapable of encoding protein. Key clarification: TRAJ2 is not a receptor or standalone therapeutic target, but a join segment of the TCR alpha locus used during gene rearrangement in thymocyte development. The actual immune receptor is the multi-chain T cell receptor complex (TCR), which mediates T cell activation; TRAJ2 is only one small part of the genomic architecture underlying TCR diversity.
