Overview

T lymphocytes, Natural Killer (NK) cells, and dendritic cells are distinct lineages of immune cells that collaborate to provide host defense and maintain immune homeostasis. T lymphocytes are the primary effectors of adaptive immunity, utilizing T-cell receptors to recognize specific antigens presented by MHC molecules (Source: National Cancer Institute, 2023). NK cells are innate lymphoid cells that provide rapid, non-specific cytotoxic responses against virally infected or transformed cells without prior sensitization (Source: PubMed - PMID: 29305459). Dendritic cells act as professional antigen-presenting cells, capturing antigens in peripheral tissues and migrating to lymphoid organs to activate naive T cells (Source: PubMed - PMID: 23562310). While these cells are central to the mechanism of action for many modern therapies, such as checkpoint inhibitors and CAR-T cell therapies, they represent cellular populations rather than individual molecular targets. Consequently, pharmacological agents typically target specific receptors or signaling molecules expressed by these cells, such as PD-1, CTLA-4, or CD19, to modulate their activity in diseases like cancer and autoimmunity.
