Overview

Taste 2 receptor member 64, pseudogene (TAS2R64P) is classified as a bitter taste receptor gene in the extended TAS2R family. Unlike typical bitter taste receptors, TAS2R64P is annotated as a pseudogene in humans and does not produce a functional receptor protein due to genetic interruptions (such as frameshift mutations or premature stop codons). Bitter taste receptors of the TAS2R family normally serve as G protein-coupled receptors mediating detection of bitter compounds, thus aiding in the avoidance of potentially harmful substances. However, TAS2R64P (as with other TAS2R pseudogenes) has lost its ability to encode a responsive receptor, and there is no evidence that this pseudogene binds bitter compounds or participates in taste signaling. As such, it is not considered a therapeutic target, does not interact with drugs, is not used as a biomarker, and holds no known disease relevance. The gene is sometimes confused with functional family members, so careful distinction is warranted.
