Overview
The tear film's mucoaqueous layer is a dynamic fluid coating the ocular surface, crucial for hydration, lubrication, antimicrobial defense, nutrient delivery, waste removal, and optical clarity. It comprises mucins (primarily MUC5AC) and aqueous components (water, electrolytes, proteins, immunoglobulins, enzymes) forming a hydrated gel that adheres to the cornea.
