The tear film lipid layer is the thin, outermost component of the tear film that covers the ocular surface. It is primarily composed of lipids secreted by the meibomian glands, including wax esters, cholesterol esters, (O-acyl)-omega-hydroxy fatty acids, and minor species of polar lipids. This layer is essential for maintaining tear film stability by reducing evaporation, providing a smooth optical surface, and protecting against microbial invasion.
