Overview

The tear film lipid layer is the thin, outermost component of the tear film that covers the ocular surface. It is primarily composed of lipids secreted by the meibomian glands, including wax esters, cholesterol esters, (O-acyl)-omega-hydroxy fatty acids, and minor species of polar lipids. This layer is essential for maintaining tear film stability by reducing evaporation, providing a smooth optical surface, and protecting against microbial invasion. The structural and compositional properties of the lipid layer ensure tear film integrity between blinks, but dysfunction or deficiency of its components—due to internal or environmental factors—can lead to dry eye syndrome and related disorders. It does not represent a single molecular target, but rather a complex mixture of molecules performing vital physical and biological functions.
