Tetanus Toxin Protein Carrier (Tetanus Toxoid) (TT)

Target
TT
Molecular classification
Toxin, Protein Carrier
01

Overview

Tetanus toxin, also known as tetanospasmin or TeNT, is a potent neurotoxin produced by the bacterium *Clostridium tetani*. The inactivated form of this toxin, called tetanus toxoid (TT), is widely used as a protein carrier in conjugate vaccines and as an immunogen in the prevention of tetanus. TT provides strong T cell epitopes and enables polysaccharide antigens to induce robust immune responses, especially in infants. In its active form, TeNT binds to neuronal membranes and blocks neurotransmitter release. TT is detoxified to produce non-toxic but highly immunogenic TT for use as a carrier. Recombinant forms and fragments are also being explored to improve safety and manufacturability.
