Thymidine Kinase (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1) (HSV-1 TK)

Target
HSV-1 TK
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Kinase
01

Overview

Thymidine kinase from herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1 TK) is a viral enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of thymidine to thymidine monophosphate (dTMP), essential for viral DNA replication. It has broad substrate specificity, including pyrimidine and purine analogs like acyclovir and ganciclovir. HSV-1 TK is a target for antiviral therapy and is used in suicide gene therapy for cancer treatment. Drug resistance can arise from mutations in the UL23 gene.
