Overview

Thymosin beta 4, X-linked pseudogene 4 (TMSB4XP4) is a pseudogene related to TMSB4X, the gene encoding thymosin beta 4. Pseudogenes are segments of DNA similar to normal genes but generally non-functional due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements for protein production. Some pseudogenes are transcribed into long noncoding RNAs and can regulate gene expression. TMSB4XP4 is reported to function as a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that may influence the expression of its parental gene (TMSB4X) through a "competing endogenous RNA" mechanism, especially in the context of cellular stress or disease such as osteoarthritis. However, TMSB4XP4 itself does NOT encode a protein, does not have enzymatic, receptor, or transporter activity, and is not considered a direct drug target or functional biomolecule in classic pharmacology. Clarification and common confusion: The functional gene TMSB4X encodes thymosin beta 4, an actin-sequestering protein involved in cell proliferation, migration, wound healing, and tumor progression. In contrast, TMSB4XP4 is a noncoding, non-functional pseudogene that may only exert subtle regulatory RNA effects and is NOT a canonical drug or therapeutic target. Summary: TMSB4XP4 is a pseudogene, not a protein or enzyme, and not a direct therapeutic target. Any therapeutic or biological relevance is indirect, through possible RNA-based regulation of the functional TMSB4X gene.
