The translocator protein (18 kDa), or TSPO, is a mitochondrial membrane protein involved in cholesterol transport, steroidogenesis, and apoptosis regulation. It is highly expressed in steroidogenic tissues and glial cells, and upregulated during neuroinflammation and cancer, making it a biomarker for these conditions. TSPO binds various ligands, offering therapeutic potential but also raising safety concerns.
