Transmembrane protein 14E, pseudogene (TMEM14EP) is a predicted human pseudogene, previously named “TMEM14E.” Although predicted to be related to transmembrane protein 14 family members, which are mitochondrial transmembrane proteins potentially involved in the regulation of heme biosynthesis, TMEM14EP itself is not believed to encode a functional protein in humans. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they are typically not translated into an active protein and thus are not considered viable molecular drug targets or disease markers[5]. While the gene is “predicted to be located in the mitochondrial membrane” and “involved in regulation of heme biosynthetic process,” these statements are computational and not supported by experimental evidence in humans[5]. No role as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter is established for TMEM14EP, and it is not included among functionally relevant transmembrane proteins studied for therapeutic intervention[1][2][3][4]. Thus, “Transmembrane protein 14E, pseudogene (TMEM14EP)” is not a valid therapeutic target.
