Transmembrane protein 183B, pseudogene (TMEM183BP) was originally identified as a pseudogene related to chromosome 1 open reading frame 37 (C1orf37) because it is intronless and retains a polyA tail at the 3’ end, but it contains a complete open reading frame that can be transcribed in a limited number of human tissues. The protein product, if expressed, may associate with cell membranes and could be involved in cell-cell or cell-environment interactions, but concrete molecular function and disease associations have not been demonstrated. The nomenclature and classification are complicated by overlap with TMEM183A, which is an actual protein-coding gene.
