Transmembrane protein 191A (pseudogene), abbreviated as TMEM191A or TMEM191AP, is a human pseudogene sequence that resembles the functional transmembrane protein 191A gene but does not encode an active protein. Pseudogenes like TMEM191A arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition and normally accumulate mutations that prevent them from being translated into functional proteins[4][5][6]. While most pseudogenes are transcriptionally silent or functionless, some can exert regulatory effects at the RNA level by acting as decoys for microRNAs or by competing for gene regulatory factors, thereby potentially influencing the expression of other genes[1][6]. However, there is currently no evidence that TMEM191A has any confirmed regulatory function, clinical significance, or drug interactions. Its main significance is as a genomic relic, not as a therapeutic target.
