Triglycerides, also known as triacylglycerols, are the main form of dietary fat and the primary energy storage molecule in animals. Each triglyceride molecule is composed of a glycerol backbone esterified to three fatty acids. Upon ingestion, dietary triglycerides undergo stepwise enzymatic hydrolysis in the gastrointestinal tract, releasing free fatty acids and monoacylglycerol, which are then absorbed, re-esterified, and transported by chylomicrons in the circulation. Triglycerides are not therapeutic targets, but their metabolism is modulated by various drugs to influence energy storage, cardiovascular risk, and metabolic health[1][3][5].
