Overview

Tumor-associated antigens from MM200 melanoma cells are a complex mixture of immunogenic molecules, primarily proteins and glycoproteins, expressed by the MM200 human melanoma cell line. These antigens were historically utilized as a key component of Canvaxin, a polyvalent whole-cell vaccine designed to treat metastatic melanoma (Morton et al., 2002). The vaccine aimed to stimulate a systemic immune response by exposing the patient's immune system to a broad array of melanoma-specific epitopes, thereby encouraging the destruction of endogenous tumor cells. One of the most well-characterized antigens within this group is TA90, a 90-kDa glycoprotein that serves as a biomarker for disease progression and vaccine efficacy (Hsueh et al., 1998). Despite showing significant promise in Phase II trials, the development of therapies targeting these antigens was halted after a Phase III trial failed to demonstrate a survival benefit over placebo (Faries et al., 2017). Today, these antigens are primarily of historical and research interest in the field of cancer vaccinology and immune monitoring.
