Overview

Direct cytotoxicity against tumor cells refers to the process by which immune effector cells, primarily cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and natural killer (NK) cells, recognize and kill cancerous cells through direct cell-to-cell contact. This encompasses the mechanisms and pathways by which immune cells induce death in tumor cells, including granule-mediated lysis, death receptor pathways, and other cytotoxic mechanisms. Tumor cells employ various strategies to evade direct cytotoxic attack, making it a complex and dynamic interaction that is a key target for immunotherapeutic intervention.
