Tumor Cell (Oncolysis)

Molecular classification
Cell
01

Overview

Oncolysis refers to the breakdown or destruction of cancer cells through chemical, physical, or viral means. Oncolytic viruses preferentially infect and kill cancer cells, releasing tumor antigens that stimulate an anti-tumor immune response. This dual mechanism makes oncolytic viruses a promising therapeutic approach for various types of cancer. Approved therapies include Talimogene laherparepvec (T-VEC), H101, and Nadofaragene firadenovec-vncg (Adstiladrin).

Mechanism of action

Oncolysis mediated by viruses involves selective infection and destruction of cancer cells, leading to the release of tumor antigens that stimulate the host's immune system. Chemical agents or physical means can also induce oncolysis.
