Tumor Cell Membrane (via Photoinduced Damage)

Molecular classification
Cell Membrane, Lipid Bilayer, Protein Complex
01

Overview

The tumor cell membrane, when targeted for photoinduced damage, refers to the plasma membrane of cancer cells that is disrupted or destroyed through photochemical reactions. This process is central to several modern cancer therapies, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) and near-infrared photoimmunotherapy (NIR-PIT), which use light-activated agents to selectively kill tumor cells by damaging their membranes. Damage is achieved via ROS-mediated lipid/protein oxidation or through disruption of the actin cytoskeleton, leading to osmotic imbalance and cell lysis.

Mechanism of action

Photoactivation of photosensitizers leading to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and subsequent lipid/protein oxidation in the membrane. Alternatively, photoactivation of antibody-photoabsorber conjugates leading to cytoskeletal disruption and membrane rupture.
