Overview

RNU2-36P (U2 small nuclear RNA 36, pseudogene) is a human genomic locus classified as a pseudogene of the U2 snRNA gene family. It is highly similar at the sequence level to active U2 snRNA genes, especially in the conserved 5′ region, but it is generally considered nonfunctional and truncated at the 3′ end[3]. U2 snRNAs themselves are components of the spliceosome machinery, essential for pre-mRNA splicing[2][4][5], but pseudogenes like RNU2-36P do not contribute to spliceosomal function. The presence of multiple pseudogenes in the U2 family reflects gene duplication and retrotransposition events over evolution, and these pseudogenes are typically not transcribed or processed like their active gene counterparts. No established role in disease or therapy has been reported for RNU2-36P.
