Overview

U4 small nuclear RNA 30, pseudogene (RNU4-30P), is a pseudogene sequence in the human genome with homology to the U4 small nuclear RNA (snRNA). Functional U4 snRNA is a component of the major spliceosome required for pre-mRNA splicing, but pseudogenes like RNU4-30P are non-coding and do not produce functional RNA or protein products[1][3]. These pseudogenes arise by reverse transcription and integration of U4 RNA sequences at new chromosomal loci, resulting in sequences closely resembling the active gene but lacking biological function due to mutations or regulatory context[1]. There is no evidence that RNU4-30P plays a therapeutic or disease-related role, nor is it a target of known drugs or involved in toxicity or safety concerns[1][3]. Functional U4 snRNA genes (such as RNU4-2) have established roles in splicing and rare neurodevelopmental disease (e.g., ReNU syndrome), but RNU4-30P is a non-functional pseudogene and not implicated in these functions or diseases[3][4]. There is nothing incorrect or misleading about the name or classification, provided it is understood to refer to a pseudogene rather than an active therapeutic target.
