Target intelligence / Profile preview

U6 small nuclear RNA 221, pseudogene (RNU6-221P)

Target
RNU6-221P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Non-coding RNA-derived sequence
01

Overview

RNU6-221P is a pseudogene derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA gene family. Unlike functional U6 snRNA genes, pseudogenes like RNU6-221P do not produce a functional RNA product and lack a biological role in the cell. The U6 small nuclear RNA gene itself codes for an essential component of the spliceosome responsible for catalyzing the removal of introns from pre-mRNA in eukaryotes[1][3]. The presence of many U6 snRNA pseudogenes throughout the vertebrate genome reflects evolutionary events such as gene duplication and genomic rearrangement but does not confer any functional response or therapeutic targetability[3].

Other names
RNU6-221PRNA, U6 small nuclear 221, pseudogene

Mechanism of action

Not applicable

03

Biological functions

None (no known function; pseudogenes do not generally have biological activity). Note: The parent gene, U6 snRNA, is involved in pre-mRNA splicing as a component of the spliceosome[1][3], but the pseudogene itself is non-functional.
04

Disease associations

None known directly for this pseudogene. Some pseudogenes are associated with disease if they regulate gene expression or are involved in genomic instability, but there is no evidence specifically for RNU6-221P[2]. Parent U6 snRNA gene is essential for cell viability but not specifically linked to disease in the context of the pseudogene.
