Unlike USP9Y, which encodes a deubiquitinase important for male germ cell development and fertility, USP9YP20 does not encode an active protein and is considered functionally inert. Pseudogenes such as USP9YP20 typically arise via gene duplication or retrotransposition and retain sequence similarity to the parent gene but lack biological activity.
