UBOX5 antisense RNA 1 (non-protein coding), abbreviated as UBOX5-AS1, is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the UBOX5 gene locus located at chromosome 20p13[1]. It does not encode a protein but plays functional regulatory roles at the RNA level. UBOX5-AS1 is significantly upregulated in ovarian endometriosis, particularly under hypoxic conditions where its expression is strongly induced by hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) signaling. Elevated UBOX5-AS1 promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), cell migration, and invasion in endometrial epithelial cells, processes that are fundamental to the pathogenesis and invasiveness of endometriosis. Knockdown of UBOX5-AS1 reverses these hypoxia-induced changes, confirming its functional importance. It has also been reported to modulate cell proliferation and autophagy through the ALKBH5-regulated pathway, further implicating it in cellular responses associated with disease progression. Its expression profile makes it a promising candidate biomarker and potential therapeutic target in ovarian endometriosis and possibly other gynecological diseases[1][5][6].
