Ultrasound imaging enhancement, in the physical sense, refers to techniques and agents used to improve the quality and diagnostic value of ultrasound images. The primary method for achieving this is through the use of ultrasound enhancing agents (UEAs), most commonly gas-filled microbubbles, which are administered intravenously to increase contrast within tissues and blood vessels during imaging. These microbubbles enhance echogenicity, making it easier to visualize structures. Functionalized microbubbles can target specific molecular markers for molecular imaging.
Physical reflection/scattering enhancement via injected microbubbles. When functionalized, ligands attached to the microbubbles bind to specific molecular targets on cells/tissues.
