Overview

Vaccine antigens processed by the immune system refers to a pharmacological classification where the therapeutic agent does not interact with a single, discrete molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme. Instead, the agent introduces an immunogen—such as a viral protein, an inactivated pathogen, or genetic material (mRNA/DNA) encoding an antigen—into the body (CDC, 2023). These components are recognized by the innate immune system and captured by professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) like dendritic cells (StatPearls, 2023). The antigens are proteolytically processed into peptides and displayed on Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules to activate T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes (NIH, 2022). This orchestration leads to the production of specific antibodies and the generation of memory cells, providing long-term protection against specific pathogens or malignant cells (WHO, 2021). Because the effect is mediated through a systemic biological process rather than a single molecular interaction, it is categorized in pharmacological databases as having no discrete molecular target (DrugBank, 2024).
