Target intelligence / Profile preview
The vaginal microbiota community is a complex ecosystem of microorganisms inhabiting the vaginal mucosa, primarily dominated by Lactobacillus species in healthy individuals of reproductive age (NIH, 2023). This community serves as a critical biological barrier, where Lactobacilli produce lactic acid to maintain an acidic environment (pH < 4.5), inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria and viruses (PubMed, 2021). Dysbiosis, characterized by a transition from Lactobacillus dominance to a diverse mixture of anaerobic bacteria, leads to conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and increases susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections and adverse pregnancy outcomes like preterm birth (Nature Microbiology, 2020). Therapeutic targeting of this community involves the use of narrow or broad-spectrum antibiotics to eliminate pathogens, as well as the administration of live biotherapeutic products (probiotics) or vaginal microbiota transplants to restore a healthy microbial balance (The Lancet, 2019). Understanding the community state types (CSTs) is essential for developing personalized interventions to maintain reproductive health and prevent pelvic inflammatory diseases (Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2022). Current research focuses on the role of specific strains, such as Lactobacillus crispatus, in providing long-term protection against recurrence of infection (PubMed, 2020).
Restoration of microbial homeostasis through competitive exclusion, production of antimicrobial metabolites (lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide), and reduction of pro-inflammatory anaerobic bacteria.
