Overview

The **vagus nerve efferent pathway** between the stomach and central nervous system is a major component of the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system. The vagus nerve originates from the brainstem and sends both afferent fibers (carrying sensory information from organs to brain) and **efferent fibers** (carrying motor commands from brain to organs). About 20% of its fibers are efferents that innervate abdominal organs including the stomach. These pathways regulate key digestive functions such as smooth muscle contraction, gastric emptying, acid secretion, enzyme release, and local immune responses. The vagus nerve also plays a critical role in anti-inflammatory signaling within the gastrointestinal tract via mechanisms like activation of M2 macrophages or modulation through acetylcholine acting on nicotinic receptors on immune cells. Dysfunction or targeted modulation—such as with electrical stimulation—of these pathways has therapeutic implications for conditions like gastroparesis, inflammatory bowel disease, depression, epilepsy, and other disorders involving gut-brain communication
