Varicella-zoster Virus Antigen (Live Attenuated) (VZV (Live Attenuated))

Target
VZV (Live Attenuated)
Molecular classification
Viral antigen, Live attenuated virus
01

Overview

The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) antigen (live attenuated) is a weakened, replication-competent form of the VZV used in vaccines to prevent varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles). The most widely used strain is the Oka/Merck strain, which induces both humoral and cellular immune responses. After vaccination, the live attenuated virus can establish latency in neural ganglia similar to wild-type VZV. Periodic subclinical reactivation may help maintain long-term immunity by boosting immune memory. While highly safe and attenuated, some safety concerns include a rare mild rash post-vaccination and the potential for transmission of the vaccine strain, especially in immunocompromised individuals.
