Attenuated strains of Vibrio cholerae are genetically modified bacteria used as live oral vaccines to prevent cholera. These strains have reduced virulence due to deletions or mutations in key toxin genes, such as ctxA/ctxB, while retaining the ability to colonize the gut and stimulate a strong immune response, including the production of vibriocidal antibodies and anti-LPS antibodies. This approach provides long-term protection against subsequent infection with wild-type V. cholerae.
