Overview

Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes cholera, a severe diarrheal disease. Only toxigenic strains from serogroups O1 and O139 are responsible for epidemic and pandemic cholera. The primary virulence factor is cholera toxin (CTX), which causes profuse watery diarrhea. Treatment involves antibiotics and oral rehydration salts.
