Vibrio cholerae O1 (Attenuated) (V. cholerae O1)

Target
V. cholerae O1
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Gram-negative bacteria, Pathogen
01

Overview

Vibrio cholerae O1 is a gram-negative bacterium responsible for cholera outbreaks. Attenuated strains are modified to reduce virulence and are used in live oral vaccines to stimulate an immune response against cholera. Key virulence factors include cholera toxin (CT) and toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP). The bacterium's ability to colonize the small intestine and produce CT leads to severe watery diarrhea. Epidemic strains often acquire mobile genetic elements that enhance their pathogenicity.

Mechanism of action

Attenuated strains stimulate an immune response without causing severe disease. Non-attenuated strains cause disease through cholera toxin production, leading to fluid and electrolyte loss.
